Replace the original system
Designed for Hemi 6 vehicles currently fitted with points, electronic ignition or ELB systems.
Replace your tired points, factory electronic or ELB ignition with a direct-fit HPI distributor conversion. Compare Type S and Type X, then choose the kit that suits your engine and rev range.
We designed our HPI kits as direct-fit replacements for a range of factory ignition setups. Here is what you get and how to choose the right conversion for your engine.
Designed for Hemi 6 vehicles currently fitted with points, electronic ignition or ELB systems.
Our 12-volt system runs without a ballast resistor and delivers a spark output in excess of 88,000 volts.
Type S covers idle to 4,800 RPM; Type X is rated from idle to 7,500 RPM and adds a genuine Bosch module and bronze gear.
Improved pickup alignment supports a strong, reliable signal to the ignition module.
The 12-volt coil is included as part of the HPI ignition conversion kit.
Connect the distributor to the coil and bypass the original ballast resistor with the supplied connector.
The bronze gear is designed to absorb engine harmonics in higher-demand applications.
Configure either kit with your choice of coil, ignition leads and spark plugs. The main difference is the distributor module and gear, which determines the RPM range.

Series 3 updates respond to owner feedback with improvements to the distributor body, advance mechanism, pickup, wiring and serviceability.
A higher-quality body casting provides a more precise finish. OE-style cap-retainer clamps replace the small screws used on the earlier design.
Revised springs tune the mechanical advance for a smoother curve across the rev range. The one-piece weight system and improved retention are designed for more reliable operation at higher RPM.
A stronger diaphragm and return spring are designed to provide a smooth response and return the vacuum advance to its neutral position.
High-quality precision roller bearings let the distributor shaft spin freely with minimal tolerance.
Improved pickup alignment supports a reliable signal to the module. A removable rubber inspection plug makes distributor inspection easier.
Softer multi-core wiring reduces resistance. Different positive and negative distributor-to-coil connectors help prevent accidental mix-ups.
Type X adds a genuine Bosch module and bronze distributor gear. The bronze gear is designed to absorb engine harmonics for dependable use in higher-demand engines.
Every conversion is built around a new HPI distributor and comes with the key supporting parts and fitting instructions.
The conversion replaces the original distributor, ignition box, ballast resistor and coil. Follow the supplied instructions for your vehicle.
Remove the original distributor, ignition box (Chrysler black or Mopar orange), ballast resistor and coil.
Disconnect the ELB system. The product instructions note that the standard air cleaner can be fitted if desired.
Install the new distributor and selected coil, then connect the distributor to the coil.
Use the supplied connector to bypass the ballast resistor and reconnect any additional wires that were attached to the original coil.
The HPI system is designed to fit without vehicle modifications. Check the supplied instructions and confirm fitment for your particular engine and vehicle before starting work.

“Quick and easy to install. Deletes that horrible black box and made the car run instantly better”
“I fitted the hpi ignition system to my 1976 vk valiant over the weekend and it made a huge difference to starting and performance. It was easy to fit and thanks suggesting and sending it to me.”
“good replacement for the tired 44 year old ELB ignition, easy fitment, its been a month and so far so good .”
“Dyno the Charger and worked a treat. Had some issues with initial setup up (Found a cut wire in the loom which caused a short under power) and the team at HP were only too willing to fault find over the phone with me. Amazing service from initial order to final install and run.”
Choose Type S for engines operating up to 4,800 RPM. Choose Type X if you need the stated range up to 7,500 RPM, a genuine Bosch module and a bronze distributor gear. If in doubt, contact Hemi Performance with your engine specifications.

Our HPI system runs on 12 volts without a ballast resistor. The kit includes a connector to bypass the original ballast-resistor wiring.
Our ignition system is suitable for ULP, PUL, high-octane race fuel and LPG.
Series 3 updates include OE-style cap clamps, improved casting, revised advance springs, a one-piece weight system with improved retention, a stronger vacuum-advance diaphragm and return spring, precision roller bearings, a better-aligned pickup, a removable rubber inspection plug, polarity-specific connectors and softer multi-core wiring.
Type X uses a genuine Bosch control module and bronze distributor gear. The Bosch module is rated for an RPM range up to 7,500, while the bronze gear is designed to absorb engine harmonics in higher-demand applications.
The kit includes a new distributor with cap, rotor and built-in module, high-energy transformer coil, male-female high-tension coil lead, ballast-bypass connector, fitting instructions, SplitFire PEAK Performance spark plugs and your choice of high-tension leads. Check the product configurator for available coil and spark plug selections.
Our ignition system produces over 88,000 volts. By comparison, factory points systems produce around 20,000 volts and Mopar electronic systems around 40,000 volts, give or take. Actual ignition performance depends on the condition and setup of the whole engine.
A stronger spark is intended to help ignite the air-fuel mixture, and customers have reported changes to starting, idle and performance. Results vary with engine condition, tuning, fuel and installation; an ignition kit is not a guaranteed horsepower or fuel-economy gain.
Prices can change, and your coil, lead and spark plug selections may affect the total. See the current price and availability when you configure your kit for purchase.
